The most widely used direct method to measure the water content in soil is the thermo-gravimetric method, often assumed as a reference procedure because it uses precise devices. Alternative indirect methods measure a physico-chemical properties from which soil water content is estimated. The most popular is the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). Large-scale (> 20 ha) soil water content is estimated through the Cosmic-Ray neutron probe. This detector measures the neutron flux (³He or Boron) within a hypothetical circle of 150 m radius to estimate average soil water content.
